Hello, My name is George F. Kurtyka and I am the only son of the late T/Sgt George A. Kurtyka. My father was stationed at Udorn from 1968-1969 with the 1973 Communications Squadron. The chopper he was in was shot down in Loas on January 17, 1969 at Site 27? He was KIA along with everyone else on board except for one person, who was to replace my father so he could return to state side. My father is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. I was wondering if you had any info on him while he was staioned there. I do not have any photos of my father while he was stationed at Udorn. Maybe some of your members might have known him and I would like to talk to them. I was only 17 years old when my father was KIA. He was stationed at Hurlburt Field from 1966 until his deployment to Southeast Asia. We lived on base at Hurlburt. He worked on the LORAN-D project there which was a top secret program in the 1960's. Thank you, Detective George F. Kurtyka (RET) Derby Connecticut Police Department |

These documents where declassified in the late 90’s and it turns out we were involved in what turned out to be the AWACS project! Who knew???? PROJECT CHECO REPORTS The counterinsurgency and unconventional warfare environment of Southeast Asia has resulted in the employment of USAF airpower to meet a multitude of requirements. The varied applications of airpower have involved the full spectrum of USAF aerospace vehicles, support equipment, and manpower. As a result, there has been an accumulation of operational data and experiences that, as a priority, must be collected, documented, and analyzed as to current and future impact upon USAF policies, concepts, and doctrine. |
